Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
For the second consecutive day, commuters on the Sealdah South branch’s Diamond Harbour line staged a rail blockade at Radhanagar station, voicing strong protest over a change in compartment allocation.
Since early morning, a large number of passengers gathered at North Radhanagar station and blocked train movement, leading to major disruptions. The core issue stems from the recent shift of a general coach to the ladies’ compartment, which passengers claim has caused severe overcrowding and inconvenience during daily travel.
According to commuters, the removal of a general coach has drastically reduced space, forcing many to squeeze into remaining compartments. Some passengers have unknowingly entered the ladies’ compartment due to crowd pressure, only to be fined by ticket checkers, further escalating tensions.
"We are not against the ladies' compartment," said one angry passenger. "But the general compartment is for everyone, and now we can’t even board the train properly." The affected commuters have demanded the restoration of the previous coach configuration to ease the crowd and avoid unfair penalties.
The blockade caused serious trouble for daily office-goers and students, many of whom were left stranded on platforms or forced to cancel travel plans. While railway authorities are yet to release an official statement, the repeated protests suggest mounting frustration among regular passengers.
